3 characteristics of our “master dog” (like a goose)
When we first meet Gus, his social skills are… let’s just say, unrefined. Early on in his time with us, Gus had to be tethered to his trainer during socialization classes because we couldn’t trust him to make good decisions around other dogs. He can easily make things more confusing.
But fast forward to today, Goose is one of our celebrity “dog teachers”!
We now trust Goose to get off leash in the classroom, confidently greet new dogs, and even help us teach social skills. Dogs learn best from other dogs, and geese have become incredible teachers. So, what’s so special about Teacher Dog?
Here are three qualities of a great dog teacher:
1. Welcome Committee
Teacher dogs are natural greeters. They approach new dogs calmly and do not overwhelm them. They seem to want the new dog to feel welcome. Our teachers help ease the anxiety of new dogs entering the classroom so they feel comfortable and safe. Think of our teacher dogs, like Goose, welcoming your dog to class.
2. Patient
Teacher dogs are very patient with dogs that are socially awkward or aggressive. They don’t overreact when things get stressful; instead, they model good behavior and help guide less experienced dogs without getting frustrated. This awareness and patience is something every dog we train has.
3. Be respected by other dogs:
It’s great to watch the dog teacher at work. Other dogs will naturally respect their calm, confident demeanor. No need for dominance or aggression – just pure leadership by example.
Can your dog be a dog teacher?
if you sit there and think “My dog could never do that.” Remember, Goose started from the same place. With the right guidance, training, and persistence, many dogs can learn to become calm, confident leaders in social situations.
Our structured socialization classes are designed to help your dog develop these skills. Whether your dog is reactive, anxious, or just needs some extra help with social skills, we can guide them on this journey.
Imagine that your dog is the one who sets the tone for the group, greets new dogs with confidence, and models good behavior for other dogs. This is possible for many of the dogs we encounter every day, and we’d love to help your dog get there.
