Gar-Type is a free Garfield fan shooting game
I think the last time I read a truly original Garfield comic was in 1998. For those who don’t know, Goldfield is a version of Jim Davis’s lazy, lasagna-loving house cat who broke out of the comics and became an abomination to the universe. Gorfield takes many forms: Gorfield the centipede, Gorfield the arachnid, a snake-like neck made of fleshless bones stretched out to a cowering Jon Arbuckle, demanding a meal that sounds like it’s being fed Sound feeding. there is nothing Like Bill Murray, his voice is deep and soft, like the eternal Monday before the Big Bang.
In Gar-Type, a free Grayfield fan game launched by Youtuber and pixel artist LumpyTouch, Garfield has been transformed into a planet. The good news is that, unlike many other Gore variants, this Gorefield is vulnerable to bullets. Ace pilot Jon Starbuckle and his prototype starfighter Gar-Type D are tasked with saving Earth from lasagna destruction.
When the screen scrolls to the right, you can help the dashing Starbucks by moving your mouse and clicking buttons. There’s a nifty charged teleportation attack that I was rarely able to target effectively, even though it’s such a simple game that your real house cat could probably finish it in one sitting. Be sure to pay attention to when you collect power-ups: they’re randomized, and there’s nothing worse than loading up on extra health refills when you’re in dire need of some bouncing spaghetti beams.
Garfield nostalgia aside, this is a pretty swanky fan production, with art and sound from Lumpy, programming from qkjosh, music from MelonadeM, contributions from stevedoesmusic, and 3D starfighter models from willkmr. The visuals are a Lovecraftian purple, and the soundtrack is that special chip music that induces mild synesthesia and makes me imagine what Red Bull tastes like.
I do like that the developers put their heart and soul into the production values of a video game concept derived from a 6/10 title pun. Not that one should analyze Goldfield intelligently. He saw everything. He’s looking over your head now. He thinks the top of your head looks a lot like a plate of lasagna.
You can play Garfield in your browser. If the above has you drooling for more Garfield Kart Fury Racing, I highly recommend reading Nate (RPS in Peace)’s review of Garfield Kart Fury Racing.
