Sam & Max’s Devil’s Playhouse remake solves a 15-year-old major problem

Adventure games are almost synonymous with computers, and some of the best games proved how fun video games can be long before modern hits like Thank God You Came. The Revolution gave us Broken Sword; Serra released King’s Quest; LucasArts brought Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and of course Monkey Island and Sam & Max, which were then Acquired by Telltale Games. This gives us the great Sam and Max: Devil’s Theaterwas recently remastered on Steam, and now a new update for 2025 solves one of the oldest issues while also adding another welcome addition.

Telltale Games did a great job taking care of the Monkey Island and Sam & Max games. Sam & Max: Devil’s Playhouse is one of the best adventure games ever made, in my opinion, and one of the most fun. The game and its two predecessors are now in the hands of a small group of former Telltale developers known as Skunkape Games, who are bringing remasters of all three games to Steam. The Devil’s Playhouse launches in August 2024 with a 99% rating from buyers on Steam, and it just gets better.

“We’ve made a quick update to Devil’s Theater to fix some very old bugs,” Skunkape Games wrote. “Many of these are bugs in the original version that thought early retirement after 15 years in the wild would be comfortable. Sorry, bugs. Happy New Year. These include missing animations, mismatched voice and subtitles, and a sign reading “43D Street” instead of “43rd Street.”

Perhaps even more pleasingly, the team has also increased the subtitle speed to match previous seasons. “The subtitles on ‘Sam and Max Save the World’ and ‘Beyond Time’ have always been very, very fast,” Skunkape explains. “For whatever reason, Season 3 [subtitle speed] It’s always been slower. A few people pointed this out and asked us to be consistent, so we did.

Skunkape’s latest update also adds D-pad support, both for moving around as Sam and for controlling the camera in max mode. The team stated, “We’re not sure why this feature wasn’t available before but is now.” Maybe a relatively minor tweak, but I’m sure someone will benefit from it, and it’s always good to see additional features being added where possible .

Sam & Max: Devil’s Playhouse Remastered is available now on Steam for $19.99/£16.75, or in a bundle that includes all three Sam & Max remastered games for $44.97 /£35.80. If you haven’t tried Devil’s Playhouse yet, there’s no better time than now – it’s still a real joy to play in the genre, and if you like a challenge, some of its puzzles will really test you.
