What is hot toddy?
The traditional hot toddy recipe is made with hot water, whiskey or bourbon, honey and lemon. It’s almost like a boozy cup of tea, super easy to make and a classic winter cocktail for relaxing.
Ingredients for this cider hot toddy
We’re adding some extra flavor and spice to the traditional hot toddy to make it even more delicious. This is what you need:
- cider: That’s right, we added apple juice to this hot toddy for an extra sweet, appley flavor! It pairs perfectly with the other ingredients.
- Bourbon: I love the rich flavor that bourbon adds to this cocktail, but you can use whiskey if you prefer.
- Orange slices: A hint of citrus adds a lovely brightness to your drink. We added orange instead of lemon for a fun twist on the hot toddy!
- spices: You’ll cook the cocktail with cinnamon sticks and star anise pods for the ultimate comfort.
- decorate: I like to top each glass with fresh apple slices and a cinnamon stick.
Customize your hot toddy
The best way to customize this cider hot toddy is to choose your favorite dark liquor to add to it! Whiskey, bourbon, brandy, and even dark rum can all be used here, it all depends on your taste preference.
Can I make it less strong?
certainly! If you prefer a less strong drink, feel free to reduce the amount of bourbon to 1 cup.
Make delicious apple cider hot toddy in two steps
- Mix ingredients. Place all ingredients (except garnishes) into a large pot and cook over medium heat for about 15 seconds.
- Spoon and garnish. Pour the hot toddy into a mug or glass, garnish with a cinnamon stick and apple rounds, and enjoy!
Easily adjust portion sizes
This complete recipe serves about 8 people, but you can definitely double it for a larger party.
Alternatively, you can cut the recipe in half to serve 2 people. Perfect for date night!
Keep warm at parties with this hot toddy
Serving a party? Place the cider hot toddy in the slow cooker and keep “warm.” If left for longer than two hours, I recommend removing all spices to avoid making the drink bitter.
Storage Tips
If making the recipe a day ahead (or if you have leftovers), remove the oranges and whole spices before storing as they may make the drink a little bitter.
