Delta Force’s campaign “will bring back fond memories of the classic FPS from 2003”

delta force has become another popular free-to-play game on Steam, but next month it will release a paid campaign, Black Hawk Down. Inspired by the iconic film and the 2003 Delta Force game, the game transports players from the battles of the near future into 1990s Somalia. It’s an interesting move that might feel at odds with the multiplayer focus, but game design director Ricky Liao said immersion and creating an authentic reimagining of Black Hawk Down was very important to Team Jade.

“With Black Hawk Down, you’ll see us working hard to deliver a unique narrative experience,” Liao told me in a recent interview, via Team Jade translator. “This is not going to be your typical RPG narrative experience. In fact, we designed the FPS gameplay features to achieve narrative goals – we want the players of Delta Force to be truly immersed in the universe we are trying to build and feel like they are really there.” On the battlefield.

Liao is passionate about the fact Black Hawk Down has been designed to keep players “playing the game instead of watching cutscenes” – he says there will be some cinematics, but it sounds like Team Jade is trying to steer away from them as a primary storytelling device.

I asked how long the event would last, and Liao said it was difficult to give a clear answer. “It’s not a purely single-player experience, as you can team up with your friends. It also depends on your skill set and play style. It’s really hard for us to give an exact number that’s been calculated,” he said.

But what he did mention is that the original 2003 Delta Force Black Hawk Down campaign shouldn’t be used as an indicator. While it will “bring back fond memories of those classic shooters,” it’s not a faithful remake, but a reboot and retelling of the BHD story.

What Liao can reveal is that those who purchase and play the event will be able to claim some exclusive rewards, which they can then show off in the multiplayer mode. As you’d expect, considering how outspoken Team Jade is about pay-to-win elements, these rewards won’t include weapons, operators, or anything else that might impact gameplay.

“We don’t want to use the term ‘achievement system’ because it can be interpreted as many things,” Liao said. “But the idea is that if you play the campaign, if you do well, or you’re really skilled, you’ll be able to earn some meaningful rewards in multiplayer, and we’ll make it fair and tasteful way to do this.

Delta Force’s Black Hawk Down campaign will end in January 2025. While this will be Delta Force’s first foray into single-player content, I asked players if they can expect more paid campaigns in the future. “Let’s transport this out first and then take a look!” Liao joked.
