Elden Ring’s boss will be defeated by the power of Saxophone in this year’s biggest speedrunning event

Awesome Games Done Quick, the annual speedrunning superstream, kicks off this weekend and will be a musical. These activities will include a player using a saxophone as a controller to complete a series of Elden Ring boss battles, and a 16-minute Crazy Taxi, where a live backing band plays rock music as the driver collects the fare. Other notable incidents include two players storming through The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild while sharing a gaming controller, and trying to clear Fallout: New Vegas in under 30 minutes An amorous attempt at “all romance” – Wait, there’s a romance option in Ashes: New Vegas?
Ah, I totally forgot that there are eight named characters in Bethesda’s Radioactive Wasteland that you can use to level cheer. Among them is a robot called “Fisto”. Well, you can look forward to that on Thursday. Boring Bullshit Festival starts on Sunday the 5th and lasts until Sunday the 12th. A whole week of sexy shenanigans. You can view the full schedule on the Games Done Quick website.
Taxi’s appearance at the supercar fest may have been inspired by news of an upcoming reboot. Musical accompaniment may include some old songs from the soundtrack. Long-toothed Taxi Drivers will remember that the Dreamcast and arcade versions had a punk rock OST that featured a lot of Offspring and Bad Religion, but due to licensing rights, these songs were removed from subsequent versions of the game.
However! You can see in this submission video how the band scheduled to participate in the Awesome Games Done Quick performed the Offspring track “Way Down The Line,” which they performed alongside the performers’ previous speedrun. They even changed some of the lyrics to jokingly reference speedrunning. I love the way they interrupt every time the game timer runs out and the menu pops up.
As for jazz, you may have seen saxophonist “Dr Doot” complete the no-hitter “Elden Ring” in his own time. This time he will face a group of “controlled” bosses. It’s so satisfying to hear the brassy beep and crackle as he rolls calmly away from danger.
Some newer games are also on the list. Alan Wake 2, The Wind Blows, Final Fantasy VII Reborn, and Silent Hill 2 Remake will all feature various types of speedrunning games. Some ambitious people are also planning a quick tour of the UFO 50, with organizers allocating 50 minutes to showcasing the retro collection. Does this mean they will spend one minute per game? Or maybe they plan to complete as many games as possible? I have no idea. But it could be a fun thing to do.
Games Done Quick organizers regularly raise millions of dollars for charity at the biennial event. This year they are again supporting the Prevent Cancer Foundation. During last year’s Summer Olympics “Done Quick” (the Beach Bros. version of the January classic), a Sekiro player’s speedrun was interrupted by one of Windows’ most confusing distractions: sticky keys. But that didn’t stop Ninja from cutting back on the action, pushing tournament prize money past the $2.5 million mark.
