French 75 mocktail
The French 75 is the epitome of elegance – a sparkling cocktail that exudes sophistication. But who says you need alcohol to enjoy this bubbly drink? With a few simple swaps, you can create a French 75 mocktail that’s just as refreshing and chic as the original. Perfect for special occasions like brunch, baby showers, or holiday gatherings, this mocktail brings sparkle and flavor without the alcohol.
Start with a bet
Hello everyone, my name is Hilary Sheinbaum and I have been participating in Dry January since 2017. bet. premise? We both tried Dry Jan for 31 days – no wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, spirits or anything else with alcohol content. Anyone who drinks any alcoholic beverage during this time loses and must purchase the winner’s dinner anywhere in New York City. No restaurant or amount is possible. If we all lose, there will be no big dinner. If we both win: we split the bill. (Did I mention I was a journalist and my hobby at the time was drinking? My friend thought he was a sure winner!)
In the end, I won the bet (and a free dinner, courtesy of my friend Al), but in the long run: I gained more than just a meal. In just 31 days, I learned how alcohol negatively affected my sleep, mood, and anxiety. As old-school as it sounds: It changed the way I drink… and my career, and so much more.
I can’t say it lasted longer than 31 days in the *first* year…but now Dry January has become a tradition I look forward to at the start of every calendar year. I drink a lot less water outside of January than I used to, and I often extend the dry period into February, March, or beyond. Sober October is also a month that I absolutely love.
My multi-year journey inspired my first book, The Challenge of Dryness, and my latest book, Dryness: A Workbook, which contains 70 tips, exercises and activities to encourage reflection and act as a non-judgmental guide. Interactive pages provide readers with insights and support on their personal drying journey.

How to start drying
Whether you’re looking for a Dry January or a Wet January, I highly recommend trying non-alcoholic wines, beers and spirits, as well as NA cocktails (aka mocktails). To start your journey, there’s a website called BetterRhodes.com which has tons of NA options to try, and there’s even an app called BetterWithout that can help you find restaurants and bars with NA menus when you’re out and about . There are also step-by-step apps like Reframe, which has helped hundreds of thousands of people reduce their drinking and provide support.
Finally, it is important to note that Dry January and the Dry Month Challenge are not recovery plans and are not intended for those seeking recovery options. If you’re really having a hard time quitting drinking, talk to your doctor.
Having said that: after the Eras tour ended (yes, I was super sad about that!), my favorite mocktail was what I call the French ’89 (a twist on the French75, also a nod to Taylor Swift (Taylor Swift)’s birth year because she was acting terrible last year and told Time magazine she didn’t drink while on tour!
