Frontier adds 3 new Kennedy flights, including longest connecting route yet
Frontier Airlines is expanding its presence at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with the addition of three new routes.
The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier announced Tuesday it will increase service from JFK to the following airports:
- Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) will begin operations on April 22.
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), starting May 1.
- Miami International Airport (MIA), starting March 30.
Value Check: Are airline credit cards still worth something?
Flights to Los Angeles and Miami will operate once a day, while flights to DFW will operate four days a week.
Frontier will face stiff competition for any of its new flights, although no other airline currently operating these routes can match the new airline’s lowest introductory fares.
Flights to Miami start at $19, flights to Dallas/Fort Worth start at $29, and flights to Los Angeles start at $49.
Of course, Frontier’s introductory fares don’t include luggage or seat assignments, but they’re likely low enough to spur some additional demand in those markets. Hopefully they will also help reduce fares on flights operated by existing airlines.
Frontier first entered JFK last June and has since expanded to five cities: Atlanta, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

At the time, the move into JFK, one of the most expensive airports to operate in the United States, was puzzling, especially for a discount airline. Additionally, it is unclear how Frontier Airlines obtained flight slots (takeoff and landing clearance) at JFK, one of the most capacity-constrained airports in the United States. Airlines need slots to operate flights from airports, and new entrants often cannot obtain these slots.
Big changes: Frontier announces first-class seats, companion passes for premium elite status
Perhaps one of the most interesting new routes is the addition of flights to Los Angeles, which is considered one of the most competitive routes in the country, especially in premium cabins. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways all operate some of the most luxurious aircraft on this 2,475-mile route, featuring lie-flat seats, generous meals and comfortable bedding.
Frontier’s best offering is its new first-class style seats due out later this year, and while they won’t compete with the lie-flat seats offered by existing products, they will offer some domestic first-class style that passengers are sure to appreciate experience.
Additionally, the 2,475-mile route from JFK to Los Angeles will be the longest route in the Frontier network, according to the Cirium schedule. Frontier’s current longest flight from Atlanta to San Francisco is 2,445 miles.
Meanwhile, flights from JFK to DFW and Miami will compete with American’s hub-to-hub service on those two routes and Delta’s flights to both cities. (JetBlue recently exited the JFK-Miami market.)
