Guide to using Global Entry abroad and countries where citizens can also apply for expedited screening

While Global Entry is primarily used by U.S. citizens to expedite entry into the U.S. from abroad, travelers can also use it to obtain Express Entry benefits in a limited number of countries.

The program provides pre-approved, low-risk travelers with expedited customs clearance upon arrival in the United States from abroad. Global Entry users can enter the country through automated check-in kiosks at more than 75 airports.

Conversely, non-U.S. citizens from 21 countries can apply for Global Entry to be used in the United States

Countries where U.S. citizens can receive expedited entry benefits

U.S. citizens with Global Entry membership can take advantage of Express Entry benefits in three countries.

Australia

Eligible US citizens with Global Entry can use facial recognition and e-passports to expedite entry and exit at 10 Australian airports.

U.S. citizens must be 16 years or older and have a biometric symbol in their passport to participate.

Australian Border Force

Travelers can enter and leave Australia through SmartGate kiosks using facial recognition and e-passport technology.

To enter Australia, Americans also need a visa.

New Zealand

U.S. Global Entry members can expedite entry into New Zealand using designated processing lines, specifically at Auckland (AKL), Wellington (WLG) and Christchurch (CHC). To do this, U.S. Global Entry members must present their Global Entry card, U.S. passport and arrival documents.

Mexico

U.S. citizens with Global Entry membership can apply for a reciprocal trusted traveler program called Viajero Confiable for use in Mexico.

To apply, travelers must be over 18 years old, hold a valid machine-readable passport and pay the application fee online. Similar to Global Entry, applicants must also undergo an interview at an admissions center.

Once approved, members can enter Mexico faster using automated self-service check-in kiosks at participating airports including Cancun International Airport (CUN), Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).

Countries where non-U.S. citizens can apply for Global Entry

Through international arrangements with several countries, citizens of 21 countries can apply for Global Entry:

For all of these countries, the app works the same way it does for American travelers. You must apply online through the Trusted Traveler Program website and pay the application fee.

If you are eligible for Global Entry approval, the easiest option is to schedule your interview when entering the U.S. from abroad through Check-In or Departure at Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C. You must bring your passport and Photo ID Your correct residential address at the time of interview.

Global access to save money

A five-year membership to Global Entry costs $120 and includes five-year TSA PreCheck membership. Essentially, you only pay an additional $42 to get the benefits of both plans.

Some co-branded airline and restaurant credit cards and other credit cards offer a statement credit of up to $120 for application fees associated with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. This credit is typically offered every four to five years, but you should check the terms of your specific card to find out exactly how often.

The Global Entry program is most widely available to U.S. citizens seeking express entry after returning to the U.S. from abroad. However, Americans who qualify for Global Entry can also use it to quickly enter selected countries.

Non-U.S. citizens from more than 20 countries can also apply for Global Entry to expedite the U.S. Customs process at participating airports.
