If you’re planning a renovation this year, artificial intelligence can help

Whenever a new year comes, I imagine my future: picturesque surroundings, beautiful and awe-inspiring lands; simple and intentional design; and a clean and tidy existence. Sometimes artificial intelligence can help you realize your wishes, such as a newly designed bathroom.

I recently spent time at a Bay Area Airbnb tucked away in a corner of a second-floor suite in a 1910s three-story home, chosen for its accessibility and affordability. I was prepared for the room to meet my basic needs, but I was still impressed by its bathroom design and overwhelmed by its fluorescent lighting. As a digital nomad, I’ve spent many nights at different Airbnbs to suit a variety of needs, from last-minute accommodations to specific design-focused options.

Partly out of imagination, partly out of curiosity, I turned to Renovate AI, an app that uses artificial intelligence and generative models to create and recreate design-driven worlds. For me, navigating to its website is like entering a very specific corner of SimsNation, built for architecture and interior design enthusiasts and experts.

After spending too long staring at the moving blobs on the homepage—somewhere between a trance experience and an art therapy session—I set out to temporarily redesign my makeshift bathroom to test whether you could actually use this app to get started Use about your home renovation.

Revolutionizing Artificial Intelligence Processes

Renovate AI has a free plan, with paid plans ranging from $8 to $60 per month. Since I only planned to redesign one space, I didn’t miss out on an opportunity by not upgrading. However, if you’re interested in interacting with the site beyond the trial run and plan to seriously use Renovate AI to help come up with ideas for multiple rooms, you’ll need a paid plan to take full advantage of the tool.

After registering and logging in, I switched to the bathroom image as part of the Home tab. (There are also External and Business tabs.)

After a few attempts to capture the entire space, I was able to upload an image of my Airbnb bathroom to the website. From here, I can decide the extent of the redesign, including Adjustment, improve, Renovation and Convert. Since I’m on the free plan, I have the option of using Renovate or Transform once before needing to upgrade.

Renovation Including style themes and layout changes, it provides a major furniture update for your space, hopefully creating a fresh vibe. Convert Providing a complete interior makeover and providing structural modifications and design transformations to create a completely new living environment. I insist Renovation.

From here, you can select the type of room you want to redesign, or you can let artificial intelligence detect it automatically based on details in the image.

I’m excited about the next step, where you can add stylistic influences that artificial intelligence will use as a redesign template. I chose Japandi (a mix of Japanese and Scandinavian styles), Zen and urban styles. I imagined a bathroom design full of warmth, simplicity and sophistication.

The final three steps involve deciding whether to keep any objects in the photo, as well as selecting hues and descriptors to influence the results of the AI operation. I added adjectives such as minimalist, warm, and sophisticated. From here, I clicked on the last button that said renovate, and wait for the newly generated image to appear.

Renovate AI gave me three options based on my style choices and descriptors. My favorite part of the redesign was the warm lighting cascading over the mirrors and the inclusion of paneling, enhancing the sophisticated look I imagined.

Bathroom Artificial Intelligence Redesign

My favorite AI redesign of the bathroom — even though it does have some quirks.

Of course, it has some weird features. For example, use a basket instead of a toilet. There is a bamboo screen in the shower (not sure how long it will last) and a round rug that looks more like a platform or a lazy susan. Definitely less dull, though—it will point you in the direction of the vibe you want in your remodeling project.

There’s no “redo” option in the app (so I basically had to stick with one of the three designs on each free plan), but for my initial trial run, I was surprised by the results. Even through the lens of artificial intelligence, good or upgraded design can really make a space feel larger.

Who should use Renovate AI?

Learning to design can be taxing if design isn’t your area of expertise, so I appreciate how artificial intelligence can expand the range of users to include those who have no design experience but do desire to immerse themselves in the possibilities of design.

I’ve always had a hard time figuring out what type of design I like, so when I discovered a platform that allowed me to “redesign” a space based on image uploads and “style” selections, I was immediately excited. (Who doesn’t like watching something visually stimulating?)

Whether you’re someone like me who just wants to reimagine Airbnb, or you’re looking to transform a room or your entire house, Renovate AI is, in my opinion, thoughtful and inclusive.

In addition to designing “renovations,” the platform also offers virtual staging and 3D rendering, as well as the ability to change interior and exterior paint colors and upgrade blurry images.

I imagine that if people like me enjoy the experience of this tool, people in the industry will find it interesting – if only to gain insight into how design choices affect data, or to quickly learn about different designs.

I’m all about things that can help refine or organize processes and enhance communication in a visually stimulating way. It’s all about reimagining any world in seconds.

Isn’t this what dreams are about?
