Let’s keep organizing—Harold Jarche

Ten years ago, I wrote a series of articles for Cisco on the topic of the Internet of Everything (IoE), a variation on the Internet of Things, or the idea that all objects (such as lightbulbs and refrigerators) will be connected to the Internet. Now that artificial intelligence is ubiquitous, I think we are in a phase of technological invasion, or rather technological monopoly invasion.

I want to look back at some of the highlights from ten years ago.

tl;dr — almost unchanged

The Internet of Everything is about the intersection of people, processes, data and things. Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM) is a framework for understanding data, information and knowledge flows. Processes, materials and things are relatively easy to control, but people themselves are complex adaptive systems. How can people become part of the Internet of Everything without being overly controlled by the other three dimensions? What new skills are needed to master the Internet of Everything? ——Master the Internet of Everything

Data literacy can be seen as part of the fluidity of the new Internet age—individuals and communities contributing to global networks that impact every aspect of their lives. For individuals, a core skill is critical thinking, or questioning all assumptions, including one’s own. People can learn and develop better social literacy through various communities. Data literacy can be improved by connecting to diverse networks. The fluidity of the mass internet era ensures that the web remains social, diverse, and reflective of many communities. Since there are more devices than people on the web, most people need this kind of fluidity. People cannot deal with the increasing complexity of the Internet of Everything unless they can talk intelligently about it. This requires educated, well-informed citizens who can speak fluently. ——Internet of people and everything

Requires creativity on a massive scale. The key to creativity is diversity of perspectives and choices. Human systems thrive on diversity, and the Internet of Everything will provide us with more potential connections. It will connect the global and the local. Connected people can create knowledge socially and, most importantly, coordinate actions together. This is the incredible potential of the “human” aspect of the Internet of Everything—human connections at scale. To realize this potential, everyone must be connected. It’s not just the process. It’s not just data. Not just things.

If it were not for everyone’s Internet, the Internet of Everything would be empty. ——Internet for everyone

The next great industrial revolution will be data-driven, and the main premise is data factory yes”Changing the nature of work by allowing freelancers to market their services to a growing audience”. The danger, of course, is that a few companies will control these data factories and freelance workers will become the products. As they say on social media, if you’re not paying for the service, you’re the product. As data becomes a capital resource, the Internet of Everything seems likely to increase the rate of automation, making more human jobs obsolete. When freelance workers lose control, will data factories become the new middlemen? This is likely to become an area of increasing social and economic tension in the near future. ——Own our data

To me, the Internet of Everything means more changes in the way we work, and it also means the need for better education models than courses and institutions to meet our learning needs and keep up with a more complex hyper-connected world. —What does the Internet of Everything mean to you?

The Internet of Everything or generative artificial intelligence—these are not that different. Platform/algorithm owners maximize profits by excluding people. The only way to address these forces is through the collective creativity of humanity. Let’s stay connected and keep organizing.
