LineageOS is an Android custom ROM project designed to support new and old smartphones. It has now added support for Android 15. The blog post claims that it will be able to bring Android 15 to LineageOS faster than expected thanks to a breakthrough in the adaptation of Android 12 to Android 14.
“From a device perspective, this is easily the easiest launch cycle we’ve seen in years,” LineageOS developer relations manager Nolen Johnson wrote in a blog post. “That means more devices on day one. “It’s ready, and we typically expect it to be ready early in the cycle.”
In addition to the system improvements brought by Android 15, LineageOS 22.1 also includes some new features and additions. First, the recent November 2024 security patches have been merged into LineageOS 19.1 to 22.1. There are also two new apps: Twelve and Camelot.
Twelve is a brand new music player that replaces the previous music player Eleven. As one of the oldest LineageOS apps, the team explains that it’s time for a replacement. Due to the older codebase, 11 becomes non-compliant with the new Android guidelines, while 12 is an improved replacement.
Some highlights of the new app include the Material You design language and support for tablets and landscape mode. It will integrate with major music server protocols such as Subsonic, OpenSubsonic and Jellyfin. On top of that, there’s better search, improved Android Auto support, and new support for streaming protocols such as HLS, DASH, and SmoothStreaming.
Camelot is a basic PDF viewer designed to fill the gap where LineageOS’s Jelly and WebViews cannot open PDF files. It is described as a simple application based on the Google Chrome and Files by Google versions.
LineageOS will use a decimal integer system to match Android’s Quarterly Platform Releases (QPR). LineageOS 22.1 is based on Android 15 QPR1, and future Android 15 QPR2 updates will eventually lead to LineageOS 22.2.
Of course, LineageOS is known for supporting older devices, and the support is excellent. You can find more information on the LineageOS Wiki, but more than 100 devices are eligible for the latest upgrade on day one. These include older devices like the Google Pixel 2 and newer devices like the Google Pixel 9 series.
