Marvel Rivals unbans Steam Deck, Mac players mistakenly fall into cheater purge

Players of Steam Deck, Mac, and other Linux-based superhero shooters Marvel Rivals can once again play without fear of being beaten to a pulp by illegally wielded hammers. Developers NetEase recently issued a 100-year ban on players they suspected of cheating, but they’re eager to distinguish between legitimate compatibility layers – the software used by non-Windows operating systems (like Steam Deck’s SteamOS) to run native Windows games – and Actual hack. According to IGN, NetEase has now apologized to the affected players and lifted the ban.

NetEase’s Discord statement read: “We deeply apologize for this situation and assure you that we will not ban players who play fair games and do not cheat now and in the future.” If I just banned players who play fair games and do not cheat player. It continued: “We have identified the specific reasons behind these false bans and compiled a list of affected players. We have lifted these bans and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

Evidence suggests that apologetic executives can deliver justice just as effectively as vigilante super-soldiers and/or sentient trees. I haven’t played Marvel Rivals yet – and even if I hadn’t played a hero shooter, Ed’s review would have put me off – but I did notice that Valve has rated it as playable on Steam Deck, so The number of SteamOS players being blamed for this alone could become very important.

The specific compatibility layer that SteamOS integrates with Proton did have some past forms of triggering certain anti-cheat systems, though in the early days of Deck this was more due to a simple lack of software compatibility than any real concern about Proton’s potential cunningness place. Still, the prospect of exposing games to the unwieldy open source Linux makes some developers uneasy. Fortnite, for example, has never run on SteamOS, and Apex Legends recently cut support due to potential cheating issues.

Even if you still can’t mention Winnie the Pooh in chat, it’s only fair that NetEase doesn’t take such a drastic approach.
