The classic MOBA “Super Hero” seems to be teasing the resurrection of the dead
Cast your mind back to the late 2000s and early 2010s. The humble Warcraft 3 mod Dota has exploded in popularity, with companies like Valve, Riot Games and Blizzard all engaged in a MOBA arms race to capitalize on it and create massive commercial success. Then came games like Dota 2, League of Legends, and Heroes of the Storm, which are considered the biggest names in this struggle. But there’s another impressive contender in that battle that’s often overshadowed— Heroes of Neuwirth. In 2022, the game’s servers were unfortunately permanently shut down, but since the start of the year activity has returned to the once-dormant social channels, suggesting a renaissance of some kind is on the way.
Heroes was released around the same time as League of Legends, which of course still proudly ranks alongside Dota 2 as one of the biggest and best MOBA games, and Heroes was a huge hit when it first launched. welcome. It did compete with League of Legends initially, but sadly, as the 2010s wore on, it couldn’t keep up with it. By moving to a free-to-play model, it wasn’t even able to achieve similar results to its competitors in the same genre. However, it still fostered a dedicated community that was large enough to justify regular updates and patches for the better part of a decade.
Originally developed by the now-defunct S2 Games and later sold to Arena of Valor and Free Fire publisher Garena, it was supported for a long time, eventually resulting in a roster of 73 playable characters divided between Goodwill Legions and the evil Hellborn faction.
However, in 2019, it released its last major update, and then in 2022, its servers went offline. However, HoN is so cherished that it is still playable thanks to its community-operated private servers.
However, Heroes may be looking to make a comeback. Nothing is confirmed yet, but there are some signs that some kind of revival is coming.
First, HoN’s previously dormant social account woke up from hibernation and posted a “Happy New Year” message, with an emphasis on the word “new.” Its website has also changed – while it now has no actual content, its design has changed to show a barely visible outline of the logo, with a few embers rising from the bottom of the screen. Then today, January 6, another new post appeared on the Heroes of Newerth social networking site, simply showing a picture of a cracked turkey egg.
Something is happening, that’s for sure. Whether it’s a revival of the original, a modern remake, a sequel, or a new game in the HoN universe no A MOBA, that all remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure, Garena looks like he’s getting ready for something.
There’s definitely still interest in a new MOBA game, if that’s indeed what we’re getting. Supervive has proven that with a few tweaks to the formula, you can create something that will grab the attention of fans of the genre. Valve has also built its own Dota 2 expertise with Deadlock, blending the MOBA with a hero-shooter style experience. Can new super heroes thrive in the current environment? It’s certainly possible, but it won’t be easy – even with the legacy of the series. I’m very interested to see what happens with these trailers, as I’m sure everyone who played HoN will be equally interested.
