Xbox cloud gaming outage: Here’s why your queue is so long

According to the official Xbox Support Twitter account, the Xbox cloud gaming service has been down since Thursday. The service, which lets you play Xbox games on phones, tablets and other devices, appears to be slowly making a comeback. But it’s not 100% yet.

An Xbox support account tweeted on Thursday that it was aware of an issue with launching the game for cloud play. On the Xbox status page, it shows that the issue began at 1:42 PM ET / 10:42 AM PT and is still being processed, with the solution stated as “pending.” An Xbox support account tweeted Friday morning that people trying to launch the game will see long queue times, but it shouldn’t be as long as it appears.

“Users may experience long wait times when trying to launch cloud gaming,” the account said. “Our team hopes users will be able to connect faster than the extended time displayed.”

When launching a game (such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6), the queue page does appear. In one case, the wait time was over 3 hours. On a normal day, there is almost no queue. It usually takes a few minutes, if at all.

A post on the Xbox Cloud Gaming Reddit subreddit r/xcloud revealed that people can’t play games on the service, whether on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac or other devices. The problem also appears to be global, with people in Germany, Costa Rica and Brazil saying they were unable to use the service.

Xbox cloud gaming is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. It’s unclear whether the influx of new Xbox users over Christmas will cause problems. Ten years ago, both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network went down over Christmas, but this was attributed to cyberattacks by a hacker group.
