Choose one word to describe 2025
It’s never too late, it’s never that difficult, it brings focus, it aligns your goals, it’s fun, it’s creative, it’s life-changing, this is the year you make it.
do what? choose a word
As far back as I can remember, I have been choosing one word for years.
One sentence that challenges me and keeps me focused, one sentence that helps me set goals for myself, my family, and the new opportunities God brings me.
Yes, the new year has begun and we are three days into the new year, but like I said, it’s never too late. There is no time limit when you need to choose a word.
So why choose a word:
– Provide clear messages
– Allows you to focus on specific areas of your life
– Create a theme for your year
– This year’s driving force
– Provide a vision of how you want the year to go
– gave us a game plan for the year
– The purpose and significance of the update
– Change our thinking, attitudes, and even what we say
– Helps with decision-making throughout the year
– challenges us to grow and improve ourselves and our habits.
– and most importantly it changes lives
As moms, our brains are often overloaded. We often forget our dreams, goals, and even our children’s names. By choosing a word for the year, we have just one word to focus on as we navigate the world of mom and our own personal life journeys.
Instead of just setting goals and checking off a list of accomplishments. Choosing a word will help you set goals for what you want to achieve this year in a new way of thinking. Become the person you were meant to be instead of just checking off all the things you accomplished.
Choosing a word can help simplify your life as you focus on one word to approach, shape and drive your year.
“If you want your life to change…to be more rewarding and exciting than ever…you can do it with just one word” –
(The author wrote a book that will change your life)
Are you already thinking or asking out loud “How do I choose a word?”
how to choose a word
To me, this is the most exciting part of choosing a word to navigate my world. It’s not difficult. However, at this point you have to be intentional and decide that you are completely okay with the idea of choosing a single word for your year.
Let’s start choosing your words:
1.Unplug – Make time for yourself with zero distractions
I know as a mom this is almost impossible. However, this may mean choosing a morning where you will wake up an hour earlier or wake up later. Or ask your husband or someone else to take care of your kids so you can go to a coffee shop or a place where you can focus on choosing a word.
Be sure to turn off all distractions so you can focus.
2.Reflection – Now you have some uninterrupted alone time. Take a few minutes to reflect on your life. You can use these questions to get your brain thinking and reflecting on the past, present and future
– What I want my life to look like this year
– What characteristics do I want to have?
– What aspects of my life do I want to change or be challenged by?
– What are your hobbies?
Think about all areas of your life—personal, family, work, ministry volunteering, etc.
Create a list of areas you want to work on, challenges you want to make, changes you want to make, new habits you want to develop, things to accomplish, personal, family, business goals.
3.Now look at your answers and see if there are patterns or similarities, or even themes.
4.Next list words that reflect patterns, similarities, or themes. Words that will inspire you, challenge you, change you.
Do you want your words to be action-inspiring words, focus words, or more descriptive words?

Determine which word on the list feels most inspiring, challenging, and useful for decision-making throughout the year
These are your words!
For example, my commitment to 2020 needs to challenge me in all aspects of my life to grow, to step into new territory, to have faith, to pursue my crazy big dreams, and to be fearless. I chose the word “grit” because it encompasses so many of these areas for me…determination, tenacity, perseverance, and more. I wake up every day and remind myself to pursue it with sheer grit.
Now that we’ve chosen a word, it’s time to apply it to our daily lives.
implement your word
Write it down, speak it out loud, share it with others. I found that the more I talked about it, thought about it, and started asking myself if I was going through each day, week, and months with this word as my focus, it became a habit.
Now that you’ve chosen a word for the year, you can have a little fun by creating a visual that reminds you of a word for the year.
A few years ago I ordered a binder and clipboard with one of my words on it from zazzle.com. I then use this binder as my planner/calendar and scrapbook to keep my to-do lists etc.
Some other interesting personalization ideas that are being created or have been created are:
coffee cup
handbag
jewelry
key chain
small painting
Painted Rocks
window sticker
etsy.com is another great place to find personalized projects where you can add your word of the year.
If you are planning on creating a dream/vision board, this is also another place to create a visual of your vision for the year.
Now that you’ve started or joined this annual word-choice tradition, why not try it as a family? Teach your child to choose a word or choose a family word. This is also a great exercise for your business, ministry, volunteer group, or even with friends.
