Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority

long story short

  • Samsung is rumored to be developing an FE version of the Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone.
  • Previous reports suggested that the Z Flip FE may use the same screen as the upcoming Z Flip 7.
  • Now the latest rumors suggest that Samsung may equip the Flip FE with the display of the Flip 6.

Samsung may be at a turning point when it comes to foldable smartphones. Until this year, the company had kept things fairly simple, iterating on the flip-and-fold form factors of previous generations. But suddenly Samsung threw the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition into the mix, and while the company may have lowered its overall goals for the foldable device, the phone ended up causing some surprise hits. Perhaps the biggest shift in Samsung’s foldable strategy could have to do with the launch of another new model, as rumors have persisted surrounding the possibility of a Galaxy Z Flip FE. Now we’re hearing more about how the hardware comes together.

The composition philosophy of Samsung Galaxy FE models is a moving target. The label comes from “Fan Edition” and is intended to highlight devices that include many of the features customers love, while often being priced more competitively than major flagships.

Still, we’ve never owned a foldable FE smartphone before, which leaves us with a lot of questions about all the component choices Samsung might have made. Previous rumors suggested that Samsung might use the exact same display panel on the regular Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Flip FE, but processor and camera choices would make the difference.

This week, however, display analyst Ross Young returned to the X, claiming that the Flip FE will be a throwback to the previous generation and use the same screen as this year’s Flip 6. The rumors about Flip FE hardware that I have heard so far.

Frankly, such a move sounds like it makes a lot of sense, and represents one obvious way Samsung could try to keep the Flip FE’s price point as competitive as possible — which is all, considering we’re talking about a foldable device here What’s more. Of course, even if this theory is correct, there’s still a lot we don’t know about how the rest of the hardware will fit together, including the choice of processor.

Samsung’s next Unpacked event is expected to take place in late January, but we may find ourselves waiting until later in 2025 for official news about the company’s new foldable phone.
